White River, Il to St Charles, Missouri
Yesterday, June 12 the was a great day. After breakfast we set off along the Levy Bike Trail paralleling the Mississippi. We saw boats pushing massive barges into locks going South. A pair of riders stoped along the trail to talk with us about our trip. He told us that the barges usually carry coal, oil and all sorts of grain. He said that billions of dollars of goods travel that way each year. Soon after we approached the Cable Stay bridge that would take up over the Mississippi and into Missouri. There was a bike lane. It's always exciting to cross a bridge. With in three hours we had crossed the bridge entered into Missouri had a great look at the Missouri river and started out on the Katy Trail. We decided to stay the night in St Charles and what place! Several people told us to eat at the Bicycle Shop Cafe. We did and we sat out doors right across from Frontier Park right next to Main St next to the trail and next to the Missouri River. Louis and Clark started their expedition west from here and there is a big statue commemorating them in the park. There is also the restored train depot. Main St is full of 1800s brick buildings all open and most retail stores and restaurants. We ate dinner at a barbeque restaurant and it might be the best barbecue that I've ever had.
